Mindfulness is being in the moment. Many of us spend so much time either avoiding our thoughts or being so stuck in our thoughts that we miss many important moments. Mindfulness takes your mind out of the future or the past and brings you to the present.
Mindfulness is good to use because it grounds you. It is a great tool to use against cognitive distortions. Cognitive distortions are supported and reinforced by negative experiences, and mindfulness can bring you back to rational thinking.
While in therapy, there will be times when looking inside yourself is overwhelming, but mindfulness will help you through it. Mindful moments of meditation and deep-breathing exercises will help you manage your emotional responses.
